The Fitchburg Police Department was involved in an officer-involved shooting early Monday morning. FPD reports that its officers responded to a residence in the 800 block of Whispering Pines Way for a report of a physical disturbance.
At the scene, officers were approached by a witness who said there was a physical altercation between two people. The witness directed officers to the residence in question. Officers entered the residence and witnessed an ongoing altercation.
Officers encounter a man with a knife who approached. FPD says the man refused to obey repeated orders to drop the knife. At one point, an officer fired his duty weapon hitting the suspect.
The 28-year-old Fitchburg residence was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. FPD says the victim of the original incident appears to be involved in a domestic relationship with the 28-year-old.
The victim suffered minor injuries and did not need medical attention. No officers were injured during the incident. The officer involved has 14 years of experience and is a sergeant with FPD.
