Charles County, Maryland – A Charles County couple has been charged in connection to a $36,000 fraud scheme targeting the Lions Camp Merrick.
Authorities say the organization is a nonprofit supporting the blind, deaf, diabetic, and veterans with PTSD.
40-year-old Melissa Funkhouser and 43-year-old Ronald Paul Funkhouser were indicted following a year-long investigation, according to CCSO.
The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation focused on the misuse of over $36,000 in funds from Lions Camp Merrick.
Melissa was a former employee and Ronald was a volunteer. The couple allegedly used the camp’s debit card for personal expenses, including car payments, utility bills, property taxes, and more between May 2023 and May 2024.
The Sheriff’s Office said the case was initiated after a suspicious $6,200 transaction was flagged during an internal audit and reported by the camp’s new president.
