A child was injured following a traffic accident in Ely. The Ely Police Department is currently investigating the incident. EPD says its officers and medical personnel responded to the intersection of Sheridan Street and Central Avenue for a young child hit by a vehicle.
EPD says it was determined that the driver of a Ram pickup was turning left onto Central Avenue from Sheridan Street and hit a child who was crossing Central Avenue in the crosswalk.
The eight-year-old victim was dragged by the vehicle for up to 30 feet from the crosswalk. The child was conscious and able to get up from under the front of the vehicle. EMS and First Responders treated the victim at the scene before they were transported to Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital.
Medical personnel stabilized the patient so they could be transported to a higher level of care. EPD says the family reported that the child is currently in stable condition and being held overnight for observation.
The Minnesota State Patrol and EPD are investigating the incident.
