El Paso Police arrest Hector Julian Velasquez in deadly collision while trying to re-enter US

A 22-year-old man is behind bars following a deadly collision in the area of 4800 North Mesa and 100 Castellano. El Paso Police report that Special Traffic Investigators obtained a warrant for the arrest of Hector Julian Velasquez for Collision Involving Death.

On June 11, 2024, Velasquez was taken into custody after attempting to re-enter the United States at a port of entry in downtown El Paso. On April 28, 2024, Special Traffic Investigators responded to a collision involving two vehicles.

The preliminary investigation suggests that a GMC Sierra was driving northbound on North Mesa while a Dodge Charger was traveling westbound on Castellano. One vehicle ran a red light causing both vehicles to collide.

The driver of the GMC Sierra, Velasquez, fled the scene following the accident. The driver of the Charger and a passenger were transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. A 26-year-old from El Paso was injured. 23-year-old Eric Leal succumbed to his injuries.
