Driver dies from self-inflicted gunshot as Wake County Sheriff’s Office searches for passenger

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a man who fled from a vehicle on Wednesday night. According to a media release from WCSO, a deputy witnessed a vehicle driving recklessly on East Williams Street near US-1 and running multiple cars off the road around 8:30 p.m. on March 20, 2024.

The deputy attempted to carry out a vehicle stop, but the driver refused. The pursuit continued to Tryon Road near Yates Mill Pond Road when the driver ran off the road and crashed into a tree. WCSO says a passenger jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot. The driver was found suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to WCSO.

The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. Authorities searched the area but were unable to find the passenger. Roving patrols will continue throughout the area. WCSO asks locals to remain alert and secure their vehicles and homes. Anyone with information is asked to call WCSO at 919-856-6911.
