Documented gang member shot by Riverside Police during carjacking investigation

The Riverside Police Department was involved in an officer-involved shooting on Tuesday. RPD reports that officers with the Problem Oriented Policing Team carried out an area check in the 6600 block of Palm Avenue for a vehicle that was carjacked earlier in the day around 10:26 a.m. on June 18, 2024.

Officers located the carjacked vehicle and found that it was occupied by a male driver and a male passenger. As officers tried to make a stop, the driver allegedly turned into an apartment complex and continued to the rear of the property.

RPD says the driver exited the vehicle holding a handgun. One POP officer fired his duty weapon hitting the driver of the carjacked vehicle. The passenger remained in the vehicle and was detained.

The driver was transported to an area hospital for treatment. RPD has identified the driver and carjacking suspect as 42-year-old Eddie Madrigal of Moreno Valley. RPD alleges that he is a documented gang member who is currently on parole for robbery with a firearm.
