Cumberland Police arrest father after 5-year-old man dies from accidental gunshot wound

The Cumberland Police Department is investigating after a 5-year-old male was brought into the emergency room at UPMC suffering from a gunshot wound. CPD reports that it was notified that the boy was transported to the hospital by a parent around 11:30 a.m. on June 5, 2024.

CPD, the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit, and the Allegany County Child Protective Services initiated an investigation. CPD reports that the preliminary findings indicate that the child was in the care of his father, 31-year-old Warin Foster, at their home on Glen Street in Cumberland.

At some point, the child allegedly found an unlocked, loaded handgun. While playing with the gun, the child allegedly shot himself. CPD has confirmed that the child succumbed to his injuries.

The child’s father, Warin Torae Foster, has been arrested. Foster is charged with Manslaughter, Reckless Endangerment, and Allowing Firearm Access to a Minor. CPD says additional charges are expected.
