Update – The Costa Mesa Police Department has arrested two men in connection to a shooting that occurred on the same day. CMPD reports that two men were arrested for attempted murder following a shooting on Friday.
Around 12:25 a.m. on June 14, 2024, CMPD officers responded to gunshots heard in the 1700 block of Placentia Avenue. At the scene, officers found evidence of a shooting but no victims or witnesses.
A short time later, CMPD learned that a male patient had arrived at an area hospital for treatment for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. CMPD says the preliminary investigation connected the shooting to the memorial on Placentia Avenue for the deceased victim from the June 11th case.
Gang Investigators identified 19-year-old Eric Garcilazo and 20-year-old Elmer Suarez-Morales as suspects in the shooting. The latter was arrested in the afternoon. Around 4:30 p.m., Garcilazo was located in the 2100 block of Pomona Avenue.
After a pursuit and standoff, the suspect was taken into custody. Both men have been booked into the Costa Mesa Jail for attempted murder.
Original – The Costa Mesa Police Department has arrested two men in connection to a fatal stabbing that occurred on Tuesday. CMPD reports officers and Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue responded to a possible assault with a deadly weapon in the 1700 block of Placentia Avenue around 11 p.m. on June 11, 2024.
At the scene, officers found a 22-year-old Hispanic male victim with stab wounds on the ground. The victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. CMPD officers learned that a second 19-year-old male had been attacked but had left the scene.
The second victim was transported to an area hospital by family members and suffered minor injuries. CMPD says detectives and gang investigators learned that the incident was gang-related.
On June 12, 2024, 25-year-old Israel Antonio Valencia and 18-year-old Christopher Mathew Pena were arrested.
