The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office has announced that it had apprehended a suspected gunman who randomly shot at a vehicle being driven by a female nurse on her way home in Rochester Hills. Authorities identified the gunman as 29-year-old Cortez Ulysses Taylor of Troy.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, a 9mm handgun believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered. Helicopters, drones, and K9s were used in the search for the suspect. Authorities say the incident happened shortly after midnight as the 29-year-old nurse was returning home from her shift at Troy Beaumont Hospital.
The nurse was driving westbound on South Boulevard near John R when she encountered a motorist who was driving erratically. The victim kept her distance suspecting the other motorist may be impaired. At one point, she tried to pass the suspect vehicle and honked her horn at the driver.
Authorities allege that Taylor rolled down his window and fired a single shot that struck the side mirror of the victim’s Jeep Compass. The bullet shattered her window. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the nurse was not injured. Detectives believe the shooting was random and the gunman had no known connection to the victim. The nurse was able to obtain the license plate of the suspect’s vehicle.
A SWAT team searched the suspect’s house but he was not there. Later, authorities confirmed the Fugitive Team took the suspect into custody. One detective received minor injuries but is expected to be okay.
