Coos County Sheriff’s Office arrests mortuary worker for allegedly stealing money from a deceased subject’s wallet

The Coos County Sheriff’s Office has announced that a mortuary worker has been charged with Burglary and Theft. Around 12:30 a.m. on December 30, 2023, a deputy responded to a residence in Lakeside, Oregon for a welfare check requested by an out-of-state family member. The homeowner was found deceased. In accordance with Sheriff’s Office policy, a non-preference mortuary was called to remove the victim.

The Coos County Sheriff’s Office deputy removed several items from the residence for safekeeping until the family could take possession of the valuables. This included some money. While processing the items at the Sheriff’s Office, the deputy noticed that $300 was missing from the victim’s wallet.

The deputy immediately reported the discrepancy to his supervisor who initiated an investigation. Authorities say the mortuary worker, 36-year-old Kyle A Robertson of Coos Bay, was contacted and admitted to taking the money from the victim’s wallet. Robertson reportedly returned $200 and said he had paid a friend back with the remaining $100.

Robertson was arrested on charges of Burglary I and Theft II. He was booked into the Coos County Jail where he remains.
