A four-year-old was shot in Clay County, Florida on Wednesday. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the shooting. CCSO reports that it received a 911 call from the 2400 block of Clover Avenue in Middleburg around 12:19 p.m. regarding a four-year-old child who had been shot.
At the scene, deputies secured the scene and paramedics tended to the injured child. The victim was transported to an area hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. Detectives believe the child accessed the parent’s handgun and accidentally discharged the weapon.
No one else was injured in the incident. CCSO confirms that no suspects are outstanding at this time. Detectives are working to determine how the firearm was stored and who else was in the home at the time of the shooting.
CCSO is working with the State Attorney’s Office and the Florida Department of Children and Families.
