DC Police Department Chief Pamela A. Smith has made a statement on the incident that occurred earlier today in the 800 block of 16th Street Northwest. Around 5:45 p.m., an adult male taking part in a demonstration in the area attempted to set himself on fire.

Chief Smith explains that members of MPD and members of the public immediately put out the fire. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene. The man was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
