Chicago man gets 12 years for drug-induced homicide

The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office reports that a Chicago man has been sentenced to 12 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. 33-year-old Shawn Smith entered a plea of guilty to one count of Drug Induced Homicide on Tuesday morning.

Authorities say that a 23-year-old man was found deceased in a bedroom of the family residence on November 27, 2022. The Naperville Police Department says its investigation determined that Smith was the source of the illegal narcotics that led to the victim’s death.

On December 5, 2022, NPD undercover officers contacted Smith and arranged to purchase illegal drugs. Authorities say Smith was pulled over as he was driving to the meeting location and taken into custody without incident.

The victim was prescribed trazodone. Fentanyl, Heroin, Diphenhydramine, and Trazodone toxicity was determined to be the cause of death. Authorities say Diphenhydramine is the over-the-counter antihistamine known as Benadryl.

Smith will be required to serve 75% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
