Charlotte Detectives investigating after driver of stolen vehicle is killed during police pursuit on I-77

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit and Internal Affairs are investigating a fatal one-vehicle crash. Around 9 p.m. on January 14, 2024, officers responded to a report of an armed robbery near the 12800 block of South Tryon Street.

At the scene, the victim informed officers that her vehicle had been stolen at gunpoint. A vehicle matching the description of the stolen vehicle was located by officers traveling southbound on Interstate 77 near Carowinds Boulevard. Officers attempted a traffic stop near I-77 and Nations Ford Road, but the driver refused to pull over.

Following a brief pursuit, the driver attempted to exit on Tyvola Road and was involved in a single-vehicle crash. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers were injured.
