Caldwell Police arrest 81-year-old man for nearly hitting victim with his car

The Caldwell Police Department has announced the arrest of 81-year-old Erwin Dahlke for nearly striking a citizen intentionally. CPD says that its officers responded to a call about a man driving in a neighborhood at a high rate of speed and allegedly nearly hitting a citizen intentionally around 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

Dahlke was allegedly threatening the citizen with more physical violence. When officers reached the scene, they attempted to stop the suspect in his vehicle. The suspect allegedly refused to yield and fled into his residence.

A perimeter was established and nearby residences were evacuated. Authorities say they learned additional information about the suspect that suggested he could be an imminent threat to surrounding residents and the general public if not taken into custody.

It was also believed that the suspect could be heavily armed and threatening to shoot. Officers trained in crisis negotiation attempted to communicate with the suspect who refused.

More officers responded to the scene. At one point, the manpower exceeded 30 people. Around 5 p.m., officers approached the residence and turned off the power. Then, tear gas was used forcing the suspect to exit the home.

CPD says the suspect will refused to comply. After being hit with a bean bag round, the suspect finally complied and was taken into custody. Dahlke received medical attention before being booked into the Canyon County Jail for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Eluding an Officer, and Resisting Arrest.
