The Birmingham Police Department is carrying out a death investigation in the 7500 block of 2nd Avenue North. Around 11:45 a.m., East Precinct officers responded to a call of a toddler shot. Upon arrival, officers observed a 3-year-old male toddler lying unresponsive inside a residence suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The toddler was pronounced deceased at the scene. The preliminary investigation suggests that the parent called 911 for help and stated the toddler was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Birmingham Police Department confirmed it had persons of interest for questioning.
