Officers with the Birmingham Police Department responded to the 1300 block of Pike Road at approximately 4:50 p.m. on December 24, 2023, to investigate a shooting. Upon arrival, officers entered an alleyway where a 12-year-old was suffering from a gunshot wound(s).

The juvenile was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Following a preliminary investigation, officers believe the victim was handling a firearm at a family friend’s house when it potentially discharged. Officers believe the victim accidentally shot himself and no one else was responsible.

Detectives are waiting on the coroner’s report to determine the manner of death.
