Birmingham Police Department on scene of homicide at 2nd Street North and 6th Avenue North

Update – The Birmingham Police Department has announced a suspect is behind bars in connection to the homicide of Byron McNeal Jr. According to BPD, McNeal was fatally shot near 2nd Street North and 6th Avenue North on March 19, 2024. The suspect has been identified as 27-year-old Raheem White of Pleasant Grove, Alabama.

White turned himself in to police. Detectives obtained a warrant for Capital Murder (Suspect Firing from a Vehicle). White is being held at the Jefferson County Jail with no bond.

Original – The Birmingham Police Department is currently on the scene of a homicide at 2nd Street North and 6th Avenue North. According to Officer Truman Fitzgerald, North Precinct officers were dispatched to a person shot call at the aforementioned location just before 4 p.m. on March 19, 2024. When officers reached the scene, they witnessed an adult male victim lying unresponsive in the roadway.

The victim was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire & Rescue reached the scene and transported the victim to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. BPD says the preliminary investigation indicates the victim was shot in the area of 2nd Street North and 6th Avenue North.

Officers are working to determine what led up to the shooting. No additional details are available at this time.
