The Birmingham Police Department has arrested a 27-year-old man in connection to a fatal hit and run collision that occurred on July 16, 2024. BPD reports that its detectives obtained a warrant for the arrest of Sammus Hakeem Strickland in the hit-and-run death of Erwin Ellis Curtis.

BPD says the victim was struck by a vehicle at Georgia Road and Messer Airport Highway on July 16. The driver of the suspect vehicle fled the scene following the incident. On July 25, 2024, BPD investigators presented case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

As a result, investigators obtained a warrant for Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Injury or Death. Strickland is being housed at the Jefferson County Jail.
