A Bend man is behind bars after being accused of killing his mother. According to Bend Police, officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at the Legacy Landing Apartments in the 2000 block of Northeast Tucson Way around 5:09 p.m. on March 20, 2024.

At the scene, responding officers found a 59-year-old woman critically injured inside an apartment. CPR was administered, but the victim succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The victim was later identified as 59-year-old Janice Marie Smith.

BPD detained the victim’s son, 40-year-old Joshua Lawrence Smith. He was transported to the Bend Police Department and ultimately booked into the Deschutes County Jail on a charge of Murder II.
