The Barnstable Police Department says it has arrested a 31-year-old Hyannis man for allegedly stabbing a young female for no reason. BPD reports that its officers arrested 31-year-old Nikolas Rescigno for stabbing a victim at the Dollar Tree Store around 12:38 p.m. on November 7, 2024.
Police say officers responded to the store and took Rescigno into custody without further incident. The female victim was transported to an area hospital where she is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
BPD says witnesses reported that Rescigno approached the juvenile victim from behind in the foyer of the store and stabbed her in the lower backside as she stood next to her mother.
Police say the suspect and victim are not known to each other and the attack appears to be random and unprovoked. Witnesses reportedly said that Rescigno stayed at the scene staring at the victim and eventually dropped the knife at the request of a bystander.
Rescigno was booked on a charge of Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon with Serious Bodily Injury. He was also booked on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court related to another incident involving a knife at the Cape Cod Mall in May 2023. Bail has been set at $5,000.
