Austin Police Department investigating December 2 officer-involved shooting of Christophe Vanover

The Austin Police Department announced it is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened on December 2, 2024 at 1124 Brecon Lane. Austin 911 Communications received a call requesting help at 1124 Brecon Lane around 9:24 AM. The caller stated a male was cutting his wrist and was bleeding severely.

Officers were dispatched to the scene. When authorities asked if the suspect had any weapons, they were informed that the man had a box cutter he was using to cut his wrist. The man in question was later identified as 49-year-old Christophe Vanover. The first two responding officers reached the scene at 9:31 AM wearing police uniforms.

They made contact with the initial 911 caller who informed them Vanover was inside the residence bleeding profusely. Based on this information, police believed Vanover was suffering a mental health crisis. Around 9:31 AM, Austin-Travis County EMS arrived at the scene and prepared to provide medical assistance.

Around 9:32 AM, officers entered the residence to check on Vanover. They made themselves known before Vanover called out to the officers to make his location known. When officers spotted him, they observed that he was pointing a gun at them. One officer deployed a taser but it was ineffective. Then, the two officers discharged their Department-approved firearms in the direction of Mr. Vanover.

Around 9:33 AM, officers stated over the radio that shots had been fired as Vanover moved out of the view of the officers. Two APD Mental Health Officers arrived and entered the home. SWAT was called to the scene at 9:45 AM. At 9:46 AM, officers inside the home radioed to say they were stuck inside and no longer able to see Mr. Vanover.

At 9:49 AM, the officers made contact with Mr. Vanover and gave him commands. When it was safe to do so, authorities were able to escort Mr. Vanover outside before he was taken to a local hospital. The Austin Police Department said Vanover is in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries at the local hospital.

He is charged with Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant. No other civilians or officers were injured during the incident.
