Ashton Wayne Root charged with Attempted Murder following shooting incident

A 32-year-old has been arrested by the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office in connection to a shooting investigation. BCSO reports that Ashton Wayne Root of Winthrop was arrested around 1:25 p.m. on May 10, 2024.

Root is charged with Attempted Murder. The shooting incident occurred on April 27, 2024. Around 9:05 a.m., Buchanan County Health Emergency Room staff contacted BCSO to report that an adult male was in the ER with a gunshot wound.

The victim was transported to the hospital in a private vehicle. The shooting reportedly occurred at a residence in the 200 block of West 220th Street in Winthrop. Deputies responded to investigate.

BCSO has identified the victim as 56-year-old Michael Wayne Root and says he sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen and arm. At the residence, a search warrant led to the seizure of numerous items related to the shooting investigation.

The victim was treated at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics before being released days later. BCSO believes Michael Root was involved in an argument with his adult son, Ashton Wayne Root, that spanned two days and led to the shooting.
