Aric Way and Philip Schmidt-Way found guilty of homicide in carbon monoxide poisoning of Dodgeville woman

The Wisconsin Department of Justice has announced that two were found guilty of homicide in connection to the death of a Dodgeville, Wisconsin woman. An Iowa County jury found 51-year-old Aric L. Way and 28-year-old Philip G. Schmidt-Way guilty of First-Degree Intentional Homicide in relation to the slaying of their mother/grandmother in Dodgeville on July 19, 2021.

According to authorities, the victim was found deceased in her Dodgeville home on July 19, 2021. An autopsy concluded that carbon monoxide poisoning was a contributing factor in the cause of death. The criminal complaint alleged that the victim had recently agreed to sell the family farm which Schmidt-Way would’ve inherited upon the victim’s death.

The complaint explains that there were no obvious sources that could explain the elevated levels of carbon monoxide in the home. Mr. Way allegedly purchased products known to react together to produce carbon monoxide. Authorities say Mr. Schmidt-Way’s vehicle was caught on camera at the victim’s residence on the night of her death.
