The Abilene Police Department has been involved in a deadly officer-involved shooting on Tuesday. APD reports that officers responded to the corner of South 7th and Alameda Street for a disturbance in progress around 2:12 p.m. on July 2, 2024.
APD officers learned that a male, 36-year-old Jeremy Bennett, was brandishing a handgun and threatening two women inside a residence. The suspect reportedly fled the original scene and was found in a separate nearby residence.
Officers established a perimeter and requested assistance from SWAT and the Crisis Negotiations Team. APD says it was learned that Bennett had an active, unrelated warrant for Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
SWAT reached the scene and crisis negotiators contacted Bennett. The negotiation continued on and off for several hours. A warrant was obtained for the residence in which Bennett was barricaded.
SWAT used gas. At some point, Bennett exited the residence with the handgun. Officers ordered Bennett to discard the weapon several times and used a less lethal impact weapon but it was ineffective.
APD alleges that Bennett raised his handgun in a threatening manner and pointed it at officers. Officers discharged their weapons hitting Bennett who succumbed to his injuries at an area hospital.
