Guatemalan man injured in officer-involved shooting in Arkansas

The Arkansas State Police is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that injured a Guatemalan man. It is alleged that the suspect was injured after resisting arrest and assaulting a trooper during a traffic stop.

Around 7:43 p.m. on July 27, 2024, a state trooper stopped a suspect on I-49 southbound after observing the suspect traveling at a high rate of speed in heavy traffic. 26-year-old Angel Zapet-Alvarado allegedly refused to exit the vehicle and resisted the trooper’s efforts to remove him.

The trooper deployed her taser when the suspect refused to reply. Zapet-Alvarado allegedly wrestled the trooper’s traser from her hands and threw it into traffic. A 31-year-old female motorist stopped her vehicle to assist.

The trooper used her service weapon to fire one round at Zapet-Alvarado who was wounded in the right temple. The suspect was transported to an area hospital and treated before being released to law enforcement.

He was booked into the Benton County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center and charged with Second-Degree Battery. A hold has been placed for a Homeland Security Investigation. Additional charges are pending.
