The Daytona Police Department is currently investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Friday. DPD reports that officers responded to 536 W Intl Speedway Boulevard (Volusia Gold and Diamonds) in reference to a shooting.

DPD says the preliminary investigation indicates that a white male entered the business and approached the victim who was working behind the counter. Following a brief verbal altercation, the suspect allegedly produced a firearm and shot the victim.

A witness nearby produced a firearm and exchanged gunfire with the suspect. Another witness approached the suspect from behind and hit him in the head with a blunt object. The suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds and a laceration to the head.

The witnesses were not injured. The victim was taken to Halifax Medical Center where they were pronounced deceased. The suspect was transported to the same hospital. The suspect has been identified as John Craiger who is now charged with one count of First Degree Murder and one count of Attempted First Degree Murder.
