Man sentenced to 15 years after allegedly assaulting victim who confronted him about his drug use

A man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after allegedly assaulting and strangling his victim. The Penning County State Attorney’s Office reports that 34-year-old Brent Silk was sentenced to 15 years in prison for aggravated assault (domestic violence) after he was found guilty by a jury in May.

This is Silk’s sixth felony conviction. His violent criminal history made him eligible for a life sentence, but he was only given 15 years because the victim did not suffer permanent injury. The incident happened in December 2023 when the victim was driving.

She allegedly confronted Silk about his drug use. Silk reportedly became violent, hit the victim, and strangled her. The victim nearly crashed as a result of Silk’s violent outburst. The State sought a 40-year sentence.

Seventh Circuit Court Judge Josh Hendrickson sentenced Brent Silk to 15 years.
