Toledo Police arrest nude suspect who exchanged gunfire with police officer

The Toledo Police Department says it has arrested an armed felony suspect who exchanged gunfire with a Toledo Police officer. TPD reports that an officer responded to the area of 2100 West Sylvania Avenue for a report of a man with no shirt waving a gun and making threats on June 19, 2024.

At the scene, the armed suspect fled and eventually led to an exchange of gunfire with the officer. Around 2:15 p.m., Lucas County Dispatch received a call about the shirtless man walking toward the Toledo Police Northwest Substation with a gun.

The officer arrived and saw the man run between houses in the 2300 block of West Sylvania. The officer found the suspect in a backyard. TPD says the suspect failed to obey verbal commands and fled with the gun in his hand toward Charlestown.

The suspect allegedly stopped in the driveway in the 2300 block of Charlestown, held the gun to his head, and began to fully undress. The officer took cover behind a vehicle and tried to de-escalate the situation.

The fully nude suspect allegedly continued running down Charlestown toward Kershaw. At some point, the officer fired multiple rounds at the suspect. The suspect continued onto Kershaw and fired multiple rounds at the officer.

Other officers arrived at the scene. The suspect allegedly threw his gun before being taken into custody. TPD says the suspect was taken to an area hospital as a precaution. It was later determined that the suspect had a felony warrant for Domestic Violence.

TPD says the suspect is also charged with Assault on a Peace Officer.
