The San Bruno Police Department has arrested a juvenile for a hate crime in a knife brandishing case. SBPD reports that its officers responded to a shooting center parking lot on El Camino Road for a report of a subject who had been threatened with a knife.
The victim informed officers that he was praying outside of his vehicle when he was approached by a suspect who brandished a knife. The victim claimed the suspect threatened to kill him and made derogatory statements about his perceived ethnicity.
Following the incident, the suspect fled in a vehicle. The victim was not injured. San Bruno Police officers located the vehicle and driver a short time later. A 17-year-old juvenile was positively identified as the suspect. The juvenile was arrested for charges related to committing a hate time, criminal threats, and brandishing a deadly weapon.
SBPD says the victim identified as Middle Eastern or Afghan. The suspect believed he to be of Middle Eastern descent as well.
