Freeport Police arrest Demetries Winston for murder in fatal shooting on South Oak Avenue

A 35-year-old Freeport man is behind bars on two counts of First-Degree Murder and one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm. The Freeport Police Department reports that Demetries Winston was served with a three-count felony warrant and complaint on June 11, 2024.

The charges are related to a homicide that occurred on January 13, 2024. Around 2:26 a.m. on January 13, FPD officers responded to a residence in the 1100 block of South Oak Avenue for a shooting.

At the scene, officers found an unresponsive 41-year-old man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The victim was transported to the FHN Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Winston was behind bars for an unrelated felony charge of Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon when the warrant was served. Winston remains in the custody of the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office.
