Renton Police investigating after 51-year-old fatally shoots a 17-year-old

Update – Renton Police say the 51-year-old suspect from Newcastle, Washington is currently being held in the King County Jail on $2 million bail after a judge found probable cause for Murder 2. It is alleged that the suspect shot a 17-year-old from Kent at the Big 5 Sporting Goods on Grady Way on Wednesday evening.

RPD says the investigation indicated that the victim and two other 17-year-olds were walking toward the store to return a handgun-style BB gun. The suspect, who was armed with a handgun, got out of his vehicle and confronted them.

The altercation turned physical leading to the suspect allegedly shooting the victim multiple times.

Original – A 17-year-old is dead following a shooting in Renton, Washington. The Renton Police Department says its detectives are investigating the homicide. RPD reports that witnesses saw three 17-year-old males walking toward a store in the 600 block of Grady Way around 7:30 p.m. on June 5, 2024.

A 51-year-old man approached the three 17-year-olds before an altercation occurred and turned physical. At some point, the 51-year-old allegedly shot one of the 17-year-old males. The King County Sheriff’s Office was conducting training nearby and heard the shooting.

KCSO deputies responded immediately and provided life-saving measures, but the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene. RPD confirms the suspect was apprehended and there is no threat to the public.
