Man sentenced to 17 years after attempting to murder a woman in Aberfan

A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to 17 years and four months following a savage assault in Aberfan last December. South Wales Police report that 29-year-old Daniel Mihai Popescu was sentenced to prison.

Authorities say Popescu launched a vicious attack on the 29-year-old victim in the middle of the street and repeatedly stabbed her. The victim suffered injuries as a result of the attack.

Officers responded around 9.10am on December 5, 2024 following a report that a woman had been stabbed on Moy Road in Aberfan. Popescu had already left the scene. Around 3.50pm on the same day, he was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Authorities say the victim, who was known to her attacker, was treated at an area hospital and discharged the next way. Popescu pleaded guilty to attempted murder and also admitted to stalking.
