Lakeland Police Department arrests Wauchula man for attempted murder in Sunday shooting

A man has been arrested in connection to Sunday’s shooting on Lakeland Highlands Road in Lakeland, Florida. The Lakeland Police Department reports that its officers responded to a shooting at 3545 Lakeland Highlands Road around 7:12 p.m. on April 28, 2024.

The 33-year-old male victim saw a physical confrontation between a man and woman near a vehicle at the entrance to the parking lot of Lowe’s. The victim did not know the man and woman, but he felt compelled to intervene and yelled for the man to stop.

LPD alleges that 28-year-old Leoncio Swaby retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and fired multiple times at the victim. The victim fled on a bicycle before being pursued by Swaby in his vehicle. Swaby allegedly fired several more times at the victim who was not struck.

Swaby and the woman fled in a white Chevrolet Cruze. At the scene, detectives and Forensic Services found six spent bullet casings. Detectives say they identified Swaby and obtained a warrant for his arrest.

Swaby is charged with Attempted Murder in the 2nd Degree.
