Update 2 – Asheville Police identify the victim in the fatal shooting on Tunnel Road on April 18, 2024. APD says the victim is Oji Trevon Mitchell of Columbia, South Carolina. Kenneth Maurice West Jr. is charged with 1st Degree Murder and Armed Robbery in the case.
Update – Asheville Police have arrested a suspect in connection to today’s homicide. APD says detectives consulted with the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office leading to charges of 1st Degree Murder and Armed Robbery for Kenneth Maurice West Jr.
West was taken into custody and booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility with no bond.
Original Story – One man is dead and one person of interest is in custody following a deadly shooting in East Asheville, North Carolina. The Asheville Police Department reports its detectives are investigating a shooting that left one dead. Around 3:13 p.m. on April 18, 2024, APD officers responded to the 160 block of Tunnel Road for reports of a gunshot.
At the scene, responding officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The man was taken to Mission Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. APD says a person of interest fled the scene but was taken into custody. The identities of the victim and person of interest are being withheld at this time.
APD says this is Asheville’s third homicide of the year.
