Michigan doctor accused of fraudulent disability insurance claim netting $400,000 in disability payments

A doctor from Sylvan Lake was bound over on charges involving an alleged fraudulent disability insurance claim and receiving years of fraudulent payments. On April 17, 2024, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that licensed osteopathic physician 57-year-old Rainna Furnari Brazil was bound over.

Brazil is accused of applying for and receiving disability payments from the Unum Life Insurance Company of America. It is alleged that Brazil continued working as a physician while she received more than $400,000 in disability insurance from 2017 to 2021.

Brazil allegedly lied repeatedly to the insurance company while denying she was working as a physician for compensation. She is charged with the following.

  • Three counts of False Pretenses – $100,000 or More, a felony punishable by 20 years and/or a fine of $35,000
  • Two counts of False Pretenses ― $20,000 or More But Less Than $50,000, a felony punishable by 15 years and/or a fine of $15,000
  • Two counts of Taxes – Failure to File, a felony punishable by five years
  • One count of Insurance Fraud, a felony punishable by four years and/or a fine of $50,0000
