Steger Police arrest individual after phone sale turns into an armed robbery

The Steger Police Department has arrested a suspect in connection to an armed robbery. According to SPD, officers responded to the 300 block of West 34th Street around 4:25 p.m. on April 10 for a report of a victim being robbed at gunpoint. The victim provided police with a description of the subject and explained they had come to the address to buy a phone.

When the victim met for the sale, a male suspect produced a gun and stole the victim’s money. The victim reported they saw the suspect go inside an apartment and lock the door. Officers from Steger, South Chicago Heights, and Crete determined that the suspect was still inside the apartment so a secured perimeter was established.

SPD says the suspect refused to answer the door. The incident was handled as a barricaded gunman situation. The suspect later surrendered without incident. 18-year-old Damairius T. Hargrave was transported to the Will County Adult Detention Facility. He will face charges of Armed Robbery and Theft. SPD says he’ll see a judge on an outstanding arrest warrant as well.
