On November 19, 2023, Louisiana State troopers worked a fatal crash on LA 23 near Captain Lane involving a 2015 Jeep Cherokee and a 2016 Toyota Scion.

Troopers conducted a preliminary investigation into the crash and believe the Jeep and Toyota were traveling south in the right lane on LA 23. The Jeep, trailing close behind the Toyota, started to move to the left lane, but for unknown reasons, returned to the right lane when it made contact with the rear of the Toyota. The Toyota veered of the roadway and into a utility pole.

Responding medics pronounced the driver of the Toyota deceased at the scene. The Toyota driver was later identified as Michael Carr, 32, of Baytown, Texas. A passenger in the Toyota was treated at an area hospital for minor injuries.

Troopers believed the driver of the Jeep was impaired at the scene. A preliminary breathalyzer at the scene revealed BAC over the legal limit. The driver has been identified as Peter Thomason, 48, of Devine, Texas. Thomason was charged with Vehicular negligent injuring, reckless driving, and Vehicular homicide. Officers transported him to the Plaquemines Parish Jail.
