The Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office has apprehended a suspect who had to be hospitalized due to self-inflicted injuries. Sheriff Mike Couvillon announced that his department received an Order of Protection on a subject at an address on West Oak Street in Abbeville, Louisiana around 2:15 p.m. on January 24, 2024.

The Vermilion Parish Service’s Office Special Response Team was activated. At the scene, the subject was found sitting in the driver’s seat of a pickup truck holding something in his hand. A perimeter was established and negotiations were attempted. At one point, the subject started the vehicle and advanced slightly.

VPSO said the subject began to inflict injury upon himself with what was believed to have been a box blade. The subject cut himself in the neck area. When deputies rushed in to provide aid, the subject sped away. The pursuit proceeded through Kaplan and north on Highway 13 towards Acadia Parish.

Spike strips were deployed as the vehicle entered Crowley. The vehicle continued until it crashed into a ditch around 6:17 p.m. before the subject was taken into custody. The individual was taken to a nearby hospital due to the self-inflicted injuries.
