Larimer County Sheriff’s Office arrests Wyoming man for kidnapping and assault

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of a Wyoming man for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting a victim. Around 5 p.m. on January 18, 2024, dispatch received a report of a white Cadillac driving at 100 mph southbound on Interstate 25 near Wellington, Colorado.

The caller informed dispatch that they saw a woman in the vehicle waving her hands and yelling for help. A Sheriff’s Office Sergeant located the vehicle going northbound at 6th Street and Cleveland Avenue. The Sergeant attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused and drove away.

Authorities blocked the vehicle on the I-25 overpass near the Cleveland Avenue exit and carried out a high-risk traffic stop. Two children stayed in the vehicle while a man and woman exited. The driver was reportedly uncooperative and fought with deputies. Less lethal tools were used, but the man continued resisting.

Deputies managed to take him into custody. The man was identified as Derrick Richie who is charged with 3 counts of 2nd Degree Kidnapping, 1st Degree Assault, 3rd Degree Assault, Child Abuse, Drove While Under the Influence of Drugs, and Domestic Violence. The female victim received treatment for minor injuries.

No deputies were injured.
