New Mexico State Police investigating Espanola Police Department officer-involved shooting

The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is investigating an officer-involved shooting. Around 8 p.m. on January 9, 2024, Espanola Police Department officers carried out a traffic stop near the intersection of Angel Duran Drive and Prince Drive. According to a news release from the Espanola Police Department, suspects exited the vehicle and attempted to flee from the scene.

A suspect turned around and brandished a handgun before multiple shots were exchanged between the suspect and the officers. The suspect was taken to a local hospital due to their injuries. No police officers were injured. The involved officers were placed on standard three-day administrative leave.

The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was requested to carry out an independent investigation into the events leading up to the officer-involved shooting.
