The Kentucky State Police has announced an arrest in the slaying of 77-year-old Rufus L. Smallwood of Manchester. Around 3:36 a.m. on January 6, 2024, KSP was notified of a deceased male near Crawfish Road in Clay County. According to KSP, the preliminary investigation indicates that Clay County 911 was notified of a deceased male who was later identified as 77-year-old Rufus L. Smallwood.

Smallwood had been reported missing on January 5, 2024. KSP said the victim had visible injuries suggesting foul play. The Clay County Coroner pronounced Smallwood deceased at the scene. The Kentucky State Police arrested 44-year-old John L. Couch. She is charged with one count of Murder and one count of 1st Degree Robbery.
