Charlotte Police arrests man who fired multiple rounds and injured five people at Romare Bearden Park

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrested a suspect in connection to a shooting at Romare Bearden Park. On December 31, 2023 around 11:30 p.m., officers were patrolling the park when they heard gunfire and rushed in the direction of the gunshots.

Authorities say the preliminary information suggests that the suspect was at Romare Bearden Park while in possession of a firearm. The suspect reportedly discharged multiple rounds that struck five victims. The victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries and all five were shot below the knee.

Detectives were able to develop a suspect description using video technology. The suspect was located, taken into custody, and transported to Central Division to be interviewed by detectives. CMPD identified the suspect as Daevion Crawford who has been charged with five counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill and one count of Going Armed to the Terror of the Public.

Crawford was transferred to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and is being held on a $750,000 bond.
