The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a death at the Salt Lake City International Airport. Police say a 30-year-old man died after accessing an airport deicing pad and entering an aircraft’s engine intake cowling. According to Salt Lake City Police, the engines were not running.

The investigation was initiated around 9:52 p.m. on January 1, 2024 when a store manager at the airport contacted dispatchers with the Airport Control Center. The manager reported a disturbance with a passenger on the secured side of the terminal. Officers with the police department’s Airport Division responded to the scene.

Airport Control informed police that the man had passed through an emergency exit door. Around 10:10 p.m., Salt Lake City Police officers and Airport Operations employees discovered the man unconscious inside a wing-mounted engine of an occupied commercial aircraft on the deicing pad. Work began to remove the man from the engine intake cowling.

Lifesaving efforts were taken, but the man passed away at the scene. Salt Lake City Police are not releasing any additional information at this time.
