Detectives with the Hawaii Police Department’s Area II Criminal Investigation Section are investigating a murder-suicide that occurred on January 1, 2024 in Kealakekua. Detectives are asking for the public’s help with any information relevant to the case. Just after 12 p.m. on New Year’s Day, Kona officers and detectives responded to a property in the 81-6500 block of Mamalahoa Highway for a report of a murder-suicide.
HPD said a 71-year-old man reported that he walked into his daughter’s residence on the same property and found the body of his daughter’s ex-boyfriend. It was believed he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head with a rifle near his body. A check of the residence led to the discovery of the daughter’s body with a gunshot wound to the face.
HPD identified the victim as 42-year-old Elizabeth Fernandez. The man’s identity is not being released until positive identification can be made and next of kin can be notified. Anyone with information should contact police at 808-935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 808-961-8300.
