Portland Police Tactical Team responding to Centennial neighborhood after suspect shot at police

Update – The Portland Police Bureau has announced that the suspect who fired shots at police in the Centennial Neighborhood has been taken into custody. The shelter-in-place order has been lifted. Around 8:09 p.m. on December 28, 2023, East Precinct officers responded to a report that a wanted suspect was seen in the area of SE Division Street and SE 143rd Avenue.

Police say the suspect was an adult male wanted in a recent homicide. Officers found the suspect leaving an apartment before driving away in a vehicle. Spike strips were deployed to deflate the tires of the vehicle. When the suspect drove to an apartment in the 2700 block of Southeast 148th Avenue, he was challenged by officers.

The suspect allegedly produced a handgun and began firing at police. Officers moved to cover while the suspect ran into an apartment and continued firing at police from inside the apartment. Around 12:03 a.m., the suspect surrendered to police and was arrested. At a later time, the Portland Police Bureau will identify the suspect.
