Update – The Portland Police Bureau has announced that the suspect who fired shots at police in the Centennial Neighborhood has been taken into custody. The shelter-in-place order has been lifted. Around 8:09 p.m. on December 28, 2023, East Precinct officers responded to a report that a wanted suspect was seen in the area of SE Division Street and SE 143^rd Avenue.

Police say the suspect was an adult male wanted in a recent homicide. Officers found the suspect leaving an apartment before driving away in a vehicle. Spike strips were deployed to deflate the tires of the vehicle. When the suspect drove to an apartment in the 2700 block of Southeast 148^th Avenue, he was challenged by officers.

The suspect allegedly produced a handgun and began firing at police. Officers moved to cover while the suspect ran into an apartment and continued firing at police from inside the apartment. Around 12:03 a.m., the suspect surrendered to police and was arrested. At a later time, the Portland Police Bureau will identify the suspect.

Original Story – The Portland Police announced that its tactical team was responding to an incident in the Centennial neighborhood after a suspect reportedly fired shots at police. At this time, no officers have been injured. The Special Emergency Reaction Team and Crisis Negotiation Team have been activated.

Police say the incident is taking place on Southeast 148th Avenue just south of Southeast Division Street. Roads are closed between Southeast Division Street and Southeast Woodward Street, Southeast 148th Avenue, and Southeast 153rd Avenue.

Public Alert systems have been activated inside the police perimeter. Individuals in the area have been asked to shelter in place. Police ask locals to please remain inside with doors locked and stay away from windows.
