Commerce Township hours long standoff ends after SWAT response

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office announced that an hours-long standoff in Commerce Township had come to an end. According to a news release from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, around 11 p.m. last night, deputies were dispatched to the 200 block of Heartwood Drive in Commerce Township for a report of a domestic assault.

According to authorities, a 34-year-old female reported that her boyfriend, a 35-year-old male, had physically assaulted her. The female fled on foot to a neighboring address. Deputies and EMS responded to the scene where the female informed them her boyfriend was intoxicated at the time of the altercation and she believed he was still in the residence.

She also advised deputies that the suspect had access to firearms and was emotionally unstable. Deputies attempted to contact the suspect who did not respond to orders to exit the residence. Although deputies detected movement, the suspect refused commands and barricaded himself in one of the bedrooms near the rear of the home.

A SWAT callout was initiated around 12:55 a.m. believed the suspect was armed. SWAT Negotiators attempted to contact the suspect, but those efforts were unsuccessful. A robot was sent into the home around 3 a.m. and observed what appeared to be the suspect with a pistol in his hand.

Around 10:30 this morning, the suspect engaged with negotiators and agreed to surrender peacefully. A short time after 10:30 a.m., the suspect was taken into custody. Authorities say the 35-year-old suspect was lodged in the Oakland County Jail pending charges.
