Houston Police dealing with officer-involved shooting at 2400 Brewster following robbery

Houston Police Department received a call about a robbery in progress around 2:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of Liberty Road, Family Dollar.  An officer en route to the scene spotted an individual matching the provided description of the suspect in the 2500 block of Brewster Street. The suspect ran into a heavily vegetative field behind a corner block. A foot pursuit ensued. When the officer tried to apprehend the suspect, a struggle ensued. The suspect allegedly tried to get the officer’s firearm and assaulted him. The assault on the officer continued. A witness told authorities that the officer was fighting for his life as the struggle continued. The officer fired his weapon at least once, striking the suspect in the back.  Backup arrived to assist the officer.

Medics transported the suspect to Ben Taub Hospital where he was listed in stable condition and undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound to the back at about 5:30 p.m. The officer sustained minor scratches and bruising to his face.

The suspect has an active felony warrant for theft and lengthy criminal history.

The suspect allegedly entered Family Dollar, grabbed beer, and attempted to leave when the clerk intervened. The suspect assaulted the clerk.

The suspect is described as a black male in his 30s. The officer involved in the shooting is a tw0-year veteran in his 20s.
