A Wayne County, Michigan habitual offender has pleaded no contest to all counts in connection with a fatal drunk driving incident. 36-year-old Demetrius Benson pleaded no contest this week. On January 21, 2023, Benson was allegedly driving westbound on 8 Mile Road when he ran a red light and hit a car driving south on Groesbeck. A victim was rushed to the hospital where they were pronounced deceased.

Following the collision, Benson fled and attempted to carjack a second individual who was driving a van. Benson was charged with and pled no contest to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death (15 year felony), driving while license suspended causing death (15 year felony), attempted carjacking (five year felony), possession of a controlled substance (four year felony), and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated 3rd (five year felony).

Since Benson pleaded as a habitual third offender, the penalties for each offense were doubled.
