Unreasonable Doubt – The Unsolved Murder Of Brandon Embry

I did what I wanted and vigorously attacked who I wanted for no reason. Just because I could. Sometimes I would hurt the people that were trying to help me and that led to a life of crime.” – Cassandra

Brandon Embry was born on September 7, 1986. He would follow in his mother’s footsteps by joining the Navy in 2005. After leaving the Navy, he attended the University of Washington as a chemical engineering student. Brandon moved to Asheboro, North Carolina in August of 2018 where he would get a job in Charlotte working in robotics. In January 2019, Brandon met a girl named Cassandra through a dating app who was from Russia and intended to go back at some point in the near future.

Within months, Brandon Embry would become ill and visit the hospital multiple times before he was found in his apartment naked and unresponsive in a pool of water and blood in mid-September. His body is covered in bruises as if he had been tortured extensively before the discovery. At the hospital, Brandon’s mother Sarah is told that her son will continue having seizures until his heart gives out. He is given comfort care before being taken off life support leading to his passing on September 13, 2019 at 8:57 PM.

The events leading up to Brandon’s death are mysterious. While Asheboro detectives claim he beat himself to death, Brandon’s family contests those findings and will continue doing so until a thorough, proper investigation is carried out. Some evidence suggests Brandon had been poisoned and tortured before he was found in his apartment, and his death may be linked to a handful of other mysterious murders with all of them being associated with his mysterious girlfriend.

Her actions before and after Brandon’s death raise suspicion that there is more than meets the eye. Cassandra will eventually contact Brandon’s family saying she was his girlfriend before agreeing to meet his mother. During the encounter, Cassandra would be described as shaking and literally trembling. Cassandra mentioned an event in which she and Brandon “got away with murder” when they weren’t charged for a blender at Walmart.

In another meeting at the Randolph Mall, Cassandra’s behavior was odd. According to Brandon’s mother, she was fake crying, rubbing her arms, and blurting out, “I’m going to jail” even though it wasn’t related to their current conversation. After some hesitancy and an alleged bout of food poisoning, Cassandra will eventually agree to meet with Detective Sudduth for an interview. Before the interview, she would text her husband saying, “I’m seriously very annoyed by this” and “Just got here and the lady already said to me you’re a 4 time convicted felon correct”.

In another message, she said, “I’m a f*cking d*mn wreck”. The interview would last for roughly two hours before Cassandra would agree to a phone dump. When Detective Sudduth stepped out of the room, he observed Cassandra and noted that she was doing something on her phone quickly. She would continue this while driving to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office where the phone dump would take place.

Once the data was extracted from Cassandra’s phone, Detective Sudduth was unable to obtain any recent GPS location data or text messages despite seeing them in the interview room. He would send a perseveration request to Verizon to ensure her records were not deleted. Later, Detective Sudduth will tell the family that he believes Cassandra will confess the next time he talks to her.
The nature of the case will change significantly on January 6, 2020 when the family learns that Detective Sudduth has been promoted with Detective Lorie Johnson taking over the case. Detective Johnson’s opinion of the case is significantly different than that of Brandon’s family since she speculates that Brandon was responsible for his death. On February 27, 2020, Brandon’s mother visits with Detectives Johnson and Wagner so the case can be closed despite so many unanswered questions.

Many of those questions focus on the odd relationship between Cassandra and Brandon. Brandon’s mother Sarah Lee has gone on an exhaustive search to uncover the truth with surprising results. After speaking with Cassandra and those who know her as well as obtaining text messages and other evidence, Sarah now believes that Brandon was poisoned and beaten in his apartment.
Brandon’s death is oddly similar to others with the victims dying around their birthdays just like Brandon.
